The award winning Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum has undergone a major overhaul to ensure its art and the house itself, are shown to best effect. The Art Gallery and Museum has a fine collection of Victorian paintings alongside Japanese art and artefacts. There’s also a specialist children’s gallery and a café area to relax in during your visit.
A short boat ride out from nearby Poole Harbour will soon transport you to the picturesque island of Brownsea. The 500-acre island owned by the National Trust is a wonderful combination of beaches, heath and woodland. Enjoy a leisurely lunch on the beach before discovering the islands many treasures including rare red squirrels, peacocks and whole host of birds that enjoy the island’s nature reserve.
In Bournemouth’s Lower Garden’s you’ll find a huge tethered hot air balloon (01202 399939) where you can climb on board and be transported to a height of around 500 feet to enjoy fantastic views over Bournemouth, Poole and even the Isle of Wight.
Set right on the seafront is Bournemouth’s Oceanarium, where you can learn all about the world’s oceans and seas and the life within them, including the fascinating upside-down catfish and the giant pacu, making this a great day out for all the family.
The Bournemouth International Centre, Pavilion and Pier Theatres are the three main venues in the area catering for most forms of entertainment, from conferences to cabaret shows. The BIC has an excellent leisure centre including a swimming pool complete with wave machine and water slide, a great choice for rainy days. Whilst the BIC and Pavilion are open all year round the Pier Theatre open its doors just for the summer season when it attracts top celebrity names from around the country.
